House Renovations

Have you heard of the snowball effect? Well it is happening in our house...big time. But the bright side that will hopefully melt this snowball is that we are very quickly accomplishing (or at least starting) many of our various projects. It all began with an electrician. He was changing out the kitchen fuse box for a more modern, and safe, circuit breaker. But to do so he had to punch a 10' x 3' hole in the wall. So I hired some plaster experts to fix the hole. Well the electrician wasn't quite ready to have the hole filed so the plaster girls (as I call them) started patching some of the more severe cracks and breaks throughout the house. They started in the guest bedroom, Kate's room and our bedroom. After a week we now have our bedroom and Kate's room back....dirty, but back. Still not able to patch the hole in the kitchen wall I ask the plaster girls to look at the kitchen ceiling. The ceiling was covered in a badly sagging wall board. So they took off the wall board in hopes of patching the plaster underneath. Upon removing the smallest bit of wall board the plaster girls were given an unexpected plaster bath as the ceiling literally caved in on them. And once the plaster and lathe were removed we soon discovered the ceiling light is unusable due to the wiring and the plumbing from the bathroom above is in desparate need of replacing. This was all of last week.

But we aren't done there. (And yes, I'm getting more and more tired as I type out this story.) So here we are Monday morning. The plaster girls return (always at 7 a.m.!!) and begin removing part of the dining room ceiling because a number of years ago the bathtub caused a severe leak and the ceiling looked to be in danger of collapse. So the girls cut out the bad sections and tape the other cracks until they need to leave for another job around 1:00. Just as the plaster girls were about to take off the plumbers show up. In order to replace all of the plumbing they will need to cut a hole in the bathroom wall. Another hole in the wall?!?! Thankfully they also said that their work will be done by today?! Awesome...if true. And the electrician just stopped by. In order to fix the kitchen overhead lighting and meet code he will have to install a light switch at each door entry into the kitchen...that is three doors and three switches!! But to make this matter more complicated one of the existing light switches controls the back porch light. So the electrician has to change this set up too...but that means the back porch then doesn't have a switch. So the electrician must then install two light switches in the back porch at each of the two doors. Ahhh. And now as I type the plumbers are cutting open the plumbing and I just put Kate to bed. The cutting/sawing is so loud only a miracle will keep Kate asleep.

But that might not be all bad because we are supposed to visit a local contractor to inquire about remodeling the bathroom. More projects, more excitement, more clean up. I'll keep you updated as we move forward. While all of this may sound like a headache, and it is to some degree, it is also very thrilling. Our house is going to be even more amazing once the work is complete....well as long as that snowball doesn't continue to grow.
